Key Characteristics & Properties

Strength: A36 has a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi (250 MPa), which is the origin of its name. Its ultimate tensile strength ranges between 58,000 - 80,000 psi (400 - 550 MPa). This strength is sufficient for many structural support frames, bases, and brackets.

Ductility: It offers good ductility and toughness, allowing it to be easily welded, formed, machined, and drilled without becoming brittle. This makes it highly fabricator-friendly.

Chemistry: As a mild steel, it has a low carbon content (typically ≤ 0.25% - 0.29% by weight), which is primarily responsible for its excellent weldability. It also contains small alloying elements like manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur.

Surface Finish: The hot-rolling process involves shaping the steel at high temperatures (over 1700°F / 925°C). This results in a characteristic non-reflective, slightly scaled surface (known as mill scale), which is dark gray and rough to the touch.

Availability: It is readily available in a wide range of thicknesses (from 3/16" to 12" and above), widths, and lengths, making it suitable for both small projects and large-scale fabrication.

The Hot-Rolling Process

The "hot-rolled" designation means the steel slab is heated above its recrystallization temperature and passed through a series of rollers to achieve the desired thickness. This process offers several advantages:

Easier Forming: Steel is much easier to shape at high temperatures.

Improved Microstructure: It refines the grain structure of the steel, resulting in enhanced mechanical properties.

Cost-Effectiveness: It is a more economical production method compared to cold rolling.

Common Applications

A36 hot-rolled plate is a fundamental material across numerous industries:

Construction: Base plates, column supports, gusset plates, and built-up sections.

Manufacturing & Fabrication: Machine frames, platforms, brackets, truck beds, and agricultural equipment.

Infrastructure: Bridge components (non-critical members), railings, and repair work.

General Use: Tanks, trailers, and any application requiring a strong, weldable, and cost-effective steel plate.

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages:

Cost-Effective: Offers the best balance of properties for its price.

Excellent Weldability: Can be welded using all common methods without pre-heating (in most thicknesses).

High Availability: The most common steel plate, easy to source.

Good Machinability: Relatively easy to cut, drill, and shape.

Limitations:

Lower Strength: Not suitable for high-stress or high-pressure applications where higher-strength steels like AR500 or ASTM A572 are required.

Susceptibility to Corrosion: Like all carbon steels, it will rust if not properly painted or coated.

Dimensional Tolerances: Hot-rolling produces less precise dimensional tolerances than cold-rolled steel.

In summary, A36 Hot-rolled steel plate is the industry standard general-purpose steel, prized for its formidable strength, exceptional workability, and low cost. It is the go-to material for countless structural and fabrication projects where extreme hardness or precise tolerances are not the primary concern.
