Key Characteristics & Material Grade

The designation "S235JR" is defined by the European standard EN 10025-2, which specifies the technical delivery conditions for flat and long products of non-alloy structural steels.

S (Structural Steel): Denotes its primary use in construction and structural applications.

235: Indicates the minimum yield strength of 235 Megapascals (MPa) at a thickness of ≤ 16mm. This is a measure of the steel's resistance to permanent deformation.

JR: Signifies the impact energy (toughness) value at room temperature (+20°C / 68°F). "JR" guarantees a minimum of 27 Joules, making it suitable for use in environments where moderate stress and impact are expected.

This grade is considered a general-purpose, non-alloy quality steel with good weldability and formability.

Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties are guaranteed by the EN 10025-2 standard. Key values include:

Yield Strength (ReH): ≥ 235 MPa (for nominal thickness ≤ 16mm)

Tensile Strength (Rm): 360 - 510 MPa

Elongation at Break (A5): ≥ 26% (indicating good ductility)

Impact Energy (KV): ≥ 27 J at +20°C

Common Applications

Due to its strength, availability, and cost-effectiveness, S235JR channel steel is employed in countless projects:

Building and Construction: As purlins, roof trusses, framing systems, braces, and supports in industrial buildings, warehouses, and residential structures.

Heavy Equipment & Machinery: For constructing frames, bases, and supports for machines, conveyors, and agricultural equipment.

Transportation and Automotive: In the fabrication of truck trailers, vehicle chassis, and container frameworks.

Infrastructure: Used in bridges, platforms, walkways, and guardrails.

General Fabrication: A staple material for fabricating racks, shelves, workbenches, gates, and various custom frames and supports.

Advantages of S235JR Channel Steel

High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Provides significant structural support without excessive weight.

Excellent Weldability and Machinability: Can be easily joined, cut, drilled, and formed using standard workshop methods.

Cost-Effective: As a widely produced standard grade, it offers great value for its performance.

Versatility: Available in a wide range of standard sizes (e.g., UPN 80 to UPN 400) to suit various design requirements.

Durability: Offers reliable performance under static and dynamic loads in normal atmospheric conditions.

Standards and Equivalents

European Standard: EN 10025-2 (UPN profiles are specified in EN 10365).

International Equivalent: ASTM A36 (USA) is a very similar general-purpose structural steel and is often considered a functional equivalent for many applications, though chemical and mechanical properties are not identical.
