S275JR Channel steel, commonly designated in Europe as UPN (Ungleichschenkliger Profil Stahl Normal or Unequal Flange Channel) or simply as C-section, is a hot-rolled, non-alloy structural steel grade defined by the European standard EN 10025-2. It is one of the most widely used carbon structural steels due to its excellent combination of strength, weldability, and cost-effectiveness.

Key Characteristics and Properties
Grade Designation: S275JR
S stands for "Structural" steel.
275 indicates the minimum yield strength of 275 Megapascals (MPa) at a thickness of ≤16mm. This is a key measure of its load-bearing capacity before it begins to deform permanently.
JR denotes the impact toughness at room temperature (+20°C / 68°F) according to the Charpy V-notch test. "JR" guarantees a minimum level of toughness for good resistance to shock and vibration.
Mechanical Properties:
Yield Strength (ReH): 275 MPa (for thicknesses ≤ 16mm). This decreases slightly for thicker sections.
Tensile Strength (Rm): 410 - 560 MPa.
Elongation at Break: Excellent elongation (typically 23% min), which allows it to deform significantly before fracture, a valuable safety property.
Notch Toughness: Suitable for use in environments where the service temperature is not expected to fall below 0°C.
Chemical Composition:
S275JR is a non-alloy steel with a controlled chemical composition to ensure its properties. Key elements include:
Carbon (C): Low carbon content (typically max 0.21%), which is crucial for its good weldability and formability.
Manganese (Mn): Enhances strength and toughness.
Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S): These are kept to low levels (max 0.040% and 0.040% respectively for JR quality) to improve ductility and weldability.
Common Specifications and Standards:
European Standard: EN 10025-2 (Technical delivery conditions for hot-rolled products of structural steels)
Channel Designation: EN 10279: 2000 (Specification for hot-rolled steel channels)
Equivalent Grades: It is often compared to ASTM A36 in the USA, though the chemical and mechanical properties are not identical.
Applications
S275JR channels are fundamental components in a vast array of structural and industrial applications, including:
Building and Construction: Primary and secondary frames, roof trusses, purlins, girts, and support columns.
Heavy Equipment & Machinery: As frames, bases, and support structures for industrial machinery.
Vehicle and Trailer Manufacturing: For chassis and framework.
Infrastructure Projects: Bridges, platforms, walkways, and railings.
General Fabrication: Used to fabricate brackets, frames, and supports for various engineering projects.
